Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is widely celebrated in Mexico. The event is a three day holiday where deceased family members are celebrated by loved ones.
Over the years, Dia de los Muertos has grown in popularity in America. Growing up, I never celebrated the holiday but now I think it’s a fun way to remember your loved ones. So this year for Halloween I dressed up as La Catrina, “Catrina has come to symbolize not only El Día de los Muertos and the Mexican willingness to laugh at death itself, but originally catrina was an elegant or well-dressed woman, so it refers to rich people,” Death brings this neutralizing force; everyone is equal in the end.
La Catrina is just a skeleton woman dressed up elegantly. She symbolizes death and represents that everyone will die in the end so wealth means nothing. Everyone is equal.
This year I painted my face and made a floral headband piece. I bought makeup from Michales and flowers from Hobby Lobby.
I was originally going to dress up as Frida Kahlo because she’s an icon and I love her style. She wore headpieces all the time and was elegant despite her back issues. But, ultimately I changed it to La Catrina because I wanted to wear face makeup! I think the skeleton/sugarskull idea was a hit!
